Unfortunately, no one can guarantee whether an old wine is ready to drink.
The only way to discover this is to uncork the wine. The shelf life depends on several factors: vintage year – how has the wine been stored all these years? and the quality class. Good wines, from the best chateaus - wine regions and vintages regularly run back around 20 years. Red wines generally have a much longer shelf life than white wines.
Opening a vintage wine remains a risk. Before you decide to open the wine, remember that older wines are becoming very scarce. A closed bottle of wine retains its value.
If you decide to take the chance and uncork the bottle, keep in mind that the cork is porous. This crumbles quickly. Use a good opener, preferably one with a lever (see accessories). The regular corkscrew from the kitchen drawer is guaranteed to break the cork.
