Wine can deteriorate in quality over time and eventually become unfit to drink.
What remains is the stable value of the wine. The older the bottle, the more valuable it often becomes. This makes aged wine not only a luxury product, but also an investment. Still, there is no guarantee that the wine is still "ready to drink", or suitable to drink at any given time. That depends on many factors, including storage and the quality of the wine itself.
